Why jersey is the perfect fabric

Firstly, jersey is just so comfortable! There are different types, and each has its own special features:

  • Cotton jersey: Super breathable, so perfect for hot days.
  • Viscose jersey: It flows beautifully - ideal for dresses and feminine tops.
  • Romanit jersey: A little more stable, perfect if you want to sew something more chic like a blazer.

The best tricks for sewing with jersey

Okay, now for the important part: how do you sew jersey without the fabric getting wavy or the seams tearing? Here are my insider tips:

  • The right sewing machine and needle
    • Make sure you get a stretch or jersey needle. It is gentler on the fabric because it has a ball point at the front and therefore does not damage the fabric.
    • If you have an overlock machine, perfect! It will give you elastic and neat seams. Otherwise, a zigzag stitch on your normal machine or the stretch stitch on the Singer Heavy Duty sewing machine will also work stitch video tutorial

    • How to cut jersey correctly
      • Do not pull on the fabric! Otherwise everything will warp. Cut very loosely.
      • You can also try pinning paper to your pattern piece with pins so that the fabric doesn't slip. BUT don't use your best fabric scissors for this, because your scissors can get a bit blunt.
      • Or if you have them, you can also cut with a rotary cutter, so nothing slips.
    • No waves!
      • Do not stretch the fabric when sewing. Allow the fabric to feed into the machine very loosely, do not pull under any circumstances, then everything will remain smooth.
      • Make sewing tests beforehand with a test piece, then you can change the tension of the machine.
      • You can also tape the seams beforehand, then you can simply sew over them and the tape will simply dissolve when it comes into contact with water (e.g. Wonder Tape from Prym).
